Your Floor is Your Canvas

Choosing your flooring is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to designing your home or remodel. I can’t stress enough how integral that decision is when it comes to the satisfaction you have when your home or remodel is complete.

Often I will have a client come to me later in the home building process looking for help with the finishing touches of their home. When we dive into the process I realize that the picture they had in their head for their home isn’t coming to vision and it all goes back to some of the key decisions they made early on.

Let me simplify that by saying….some of the first few major decisions you make in your new build or renovation project are EXTREMELY important. I am not trying to scare you but I do want to bring to light how much these early decisions will impact all of the future design decisions within your home. You must think big picture!

Your flooring is the blank canvas for the beautiful home you are about to create. Any great artist knows that a well prepared canvas is critical to the masterpiece, your floor is no exception.

Truly, your floor is the most exposed surface in your home which is why you can’t just walk into a store and choose your favourites and be done….there is a lot to consider if you ultimately want to love the finished look.

For example, you have your heart set on a beautiful gray dining set you spotted in your local furniture store and you just can’t live without it! When you go to choose your floors you need to consider how well they will go with the table, are the colour tones complimentary to one another or are they going to clash or be too similar?

Another great example is your kitchen cabinetry. You love the multi toned warm look of hickory cabinets but you also love that same look on your flooring. Yes you may LOVE them both, but together it’s going to be busy and overwhelming….too much of a good thing it turns out, is not always a good thing!

When choosing major elements of your home you must consider what you want to be the stand out feature and what is going to play the supporting roles! With flooring and cabinets for example, it is really hard to make them both stand out within the same space and still create a welcoming environment that you love. It’s kind of like walking into a room with my sister-in-law and cousin whom both want my attention at the same time. Sensory overload!

So you really have to consider all of the components of the room or home when making those early choices and how they are all going to work together to get the results you have been dreaming about!

There are so many new beautiful and functional flooring options to choose from so make sure to give your local United Floors store a call! They are educated and willing to go the extra mile to help you in your search. Take them pictures of the other elements that you plan on bringing into your space so they can give you the right advice and selection to get you set in the right direction.
