Make your Floor as your Focus

What came first? The chicken or the egg? This is one of the oldest debates out there, and honestly, I don’t have a strong opinion or belief on that one! However, in the design and decor world, we have a similar debate and when you are building or doing a sizeable reno you will have to consider which comes first, the flooring or the rest?! This, I can chime in on.

If you talk to an established artist as they embark on a new masterpiece, they will tell you that the success in achieving their desired final result is in starting with a well prepared canvas. In the design world, your floor is one of the largest areas in the home, and it has a huge impact on the overall finished look! It is your canvas, and a major purchase, so give it plenty of thought and the attention it deserves off the start.

Not only is your flooring your starting canvas, but it is a large purchase, and a part of your home that will not be changed out often. It is a large initial piece to the overall puzzle! Unlike choosing the paint colors on your wall, which is easy and inexpensive to change, the floor is much greater investment into the look of your home for the foreseeable future. Think about choosing flooring that will help the other elements of your home complement each other, blend out and flow.

The key thing to think about when you are choosing flooring, is to see it as a piece of the final overall look of your home. Are you wanting wood or wood look throughout the majority of your home? If so, you must consider the stain on your kitchen cabinetry, casings and trim and the color of the new dining set you have been dreaming of. You want to tie it all together! Would you wear red plaid pants paired with an orange floral shirt just because you love them both on their own? Would you invite the neighbors over for Friday night dinner and prepare a meal of mashed potatoes, scalloped potatoes and baked potatoes?! You might see my uncle in an outfit like that out on the golf course, and my mother-in-law may serve 3 potato dishes if she had too many potatoes that needed to get used up, but seriously whether it’s our outfit, our home or the meal we serve our company, we try to make the components blend and complement each other.

It may seem complicated but don’t be overwhelmed. Think of your floor as your canvas and just get started. Never be afraid to consult a flooring specialist or an interior designer. They will help you choose the perfect flooring to build on, and starting from the ground up, the other elements will be added to complement each other and result in an overall look you love.
